Preparing for a Spray Finish

When using spray finishes, taking a little time on prep up front can save some headaches down the road.

Spray Finish Preparation

FINISH BEFORE ASSEMBLY. On some projects, it makes sense to spray the parts before assembly. This way, it’s easier to get a consistent finish. But you’ll want to mask off any areas that will be glued (above photo left).

PREP FOR PAINT. If you’re painting the project, spend some extra time to get a smooth surface. That means using a filler and sanding it smooth. And I like to use a good-quality primer before the topcoat.
